Redarken Your Rings

Did the lettering on your rings fade? It's a quick 30 second fix!

HOW TO BLACKEN METAL JEWELRY

We offer "natural" and "darkened" lettering on our rings.

How we blacken the hand stamped letters on your rings is dependent on the metal choice: Gold is darkened with a black lacquer finish and Silver is chemically oxidized with Liver of Sulfur. Both are surface treatments and will fade over time, especially due to the constant use of hand sanitizer, soaps, and cleaning chemicals our hands are exposed to.

In this post, we will walk you through how to avoid rapid fading of your lettering, how to easily refresh the lettering on your piece yourself, and other reblackening options we provide.

  • Take off your rings when washing your hands and using hand sanitizer which is alcohol based and is harsh.
  • Remove your rings before applying lotion as it builds up on your rings, dulling their sparkle. The fragrance in lotion can also cause your rings to oxidize.
  • Always remove your rings when using any cleaning products, especially Clorox and other harsh chemicals. These can actually eat away at the metal and cause scratching.
  • If  your rings have blackened letters, this is a surface treatment like a lacquer that will wear away with frequent hand washing.

  • Tools needed: a black oil-based paint pen (we use Elmer's paint pens in house, but Sharpies are also a perfectly fine option!), an alcohol wipe, a soft cloth or paper towel
  • Using a black paint pen or Sharpie marker, color over the stamping, ensuring to get the ink down into the impressions. No need to be neat!
  • Immediately wipe off using a nonabrasive soft cloth or paper towel. If any remains, you can use a small amount of rubbing alcohol to easily remove excess ink
  • Your ring will look like new!
